Children need you now more than ever!
During March this year, Nokuthula, living in one of the houses at Langlaagte, grew increasingly quiet. She had no contact with her family and she had no way of knowing how they were. Reports of starving people added to the fourteen-year-old’s worry. She knew they were in dire straits even before the outbreak of Covid-19.
A month into lockdown, her worst fears were realised. A family member brought the terrible news that her mother had died. The funeral had taken place two weeks earlier. She would never be able to say goodbye properly.
Nokuthula arrived at the home like most other children, with only the clothes on her back. She soon had secondhand clothes from the store, but she desperately needed new underwear to restore her dignity.
The news of her mother’s death has devastated her. To restore this young girl to the beautiful and talented young woman that she promises to be will take time, patience and a lot of money.
Many children in care have stories like that of Nokuthula. They are extremely vulnerable and their lives have to be rebuilt slowly and painstakingly.
You can help a girl like Nokuthula by donating R20 towards new underwear. It will be the first step on her long road to self-respect and fulfilling her potential.
Nokuthula and children like her need you to share this message with as many people as you can.
